Antwerp - Visitor Information

Antwerp

With architecture dating back to the 16th Century, Antwerp's skyline tells of a fascinating and historic city.

Antwerp is the second largest city in Belgium and has the second largest harbour in Europe (after Rotterdam).  Moreover, Antwerp is a splendid city with numerous architectural highlights, most of which date from the 16th (the golden era of Antwerp) and the 17th century. The city is easily accessible after sailing to Amsterdam from Newcastle.

Lovers of history will be kept busy by the many splendid historic sites the city has to offer. Peter Paul Rubens once lived here, so a visit to 'The House of Rubens' is not to be missed, containing some of his paintings which depict Antwerp in the 17th Century.

Antwerp is the diamond center of the World. If diamonds really are a girl's best friend, then a lot of ladies will not leave out a visit to the diamond district around the Railway Station.

Thanks to the efforts of numerous young Flemish fashion designers, Antwerp has earned a place among the fashion cities of the world ( e.g. Walter Van Beirendonck, Nadine Wynants, Ann De Meulemeester, Dirk Bikkembergs, Kaat Tilley and others).

After sailing into Amsterdam, the port of Antwerp can be reached in under 2 hours by car, placing it high on the list of places to visit on a cruise break or driving holiday to Europe.

Port of Antwerp

The port of Antwerp is the second largest in Europe (only Rotterdam is bigger), so this hub of activity is well worth a visit to see all the ships sail in and out, and absorb the busy atmosphere.

Antwerp Zoo

The zoo in Antwerp is located near the City Centre so it is ideal for a quick visit.  Take the family and look at all of the amazing animals.

Art Galleries & Museums

Antwerp has a host of superb art galleries and museums for the art lover - as a place where Peter Paul Rubens lived and painted, Antwerp has a rich artistic background.

Diamond Centre

As the diamond capital of the world, Antwerp is the ideal place to learn more about diamonds - how they are formed, cut and polished - or simply the perfect city go and shop for one!
