The impressive 13th Century St. Petri church in Malmö

With a population of around 255,000 Malmö is Sweden's third city. It has a modern, continental atmosphere enhanced by a rich history dating back to around the 1275 when it was known as, "Malmhauger", which roughly translates as "sand heaps".

Its economic prosperity was largely thanks to the good fishing and for many hundreds of years the locals have exported salt herring.
 
Today, Malmö is a truly international city whose residents speak some 100 languages and represent some 164 different nationalities. The social and economic characteristics of the city are changing in time with city's evolution from an industrial city to a city of knowledge.

In addition to sandy beaches and fantastic countryside Malmö offers access to the fascinating city of Copenhagen over the fantastic Oresund Bridge in less than 30 minutes.

We can sail you from Harwich in Essex to Esjberg in Denmark, where there are direct rail connections to Copenhagen and across the Oresund bridge to Malmö. You can also benefit from taking your car onboard our Esbjerg service then use the same route and bridge - making travelling to Malmö pleasant and easy.

Places to visit:

Town Hall
On the city´s oldest square, Stortorget, stands the Town Hall.  It was originally built in 1546, but has been altered several times. The Town Hall was built in its current form in 1864-69.

St. Petri Church
One of the oldest buildings in Malmö today is St. Petri church. It was founded at the beginning of the 14th century in Baltic Gothic style. The church is a gem.

St. Gertrud District

The St Gertrud District consists of 19 different buildings dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The beautifully restored district was awarded for Europe Nostra "Diploma of Merit"

Thottska huset
Malmö's oldest preserved half-timbered house, built in 1558.

Vagnmuseet
The most distinguished collection of coaches, bicycles and fire engines in the Nordic countries can be found here at the Carriage Museum. The building used to be the cavallery house and later on a market hall.
