Brass Band contest

Leading Dover – France ferry operator, DFDS Seaways (formerly Norfolkline) is sponsoring a unique brass band contest, as 15 brass bands from all over Europe compete for a £5,000 winning prize – and a recording contract.

The ‘X Factor style’ contest, which is being held in Dover on 11 February, will see bands from all sections competing for the sought after prize, performing three pieces in front of a panel of adjudicators.

As well as the winning band, a £500 prize will also be awarded to the best soloist (who, along with the winner also receives a recording contract with New Eden Studio in Dover), and also the best non-Championship band (if not the overall winner) will receive £1,000.

The event culminates in an evening concert, featuring the European and British Brass Band Open Champions, the Cory Band as lead performers.

Graham Harvey, Contest Director, and also one of the adjudicators, has been judging Championships and competitions for many years, and says: “We’re really excited about this contest, as we believe it’s a format that hasn’t been used before. The competition is already shaping up to be a hard fought contest, and the calibre of bands that we have are extremely high. We’re also delighted to be welcoming the Cory Band to the evening concert, as this will be a great round up, to what will be a thrilling day.”

Joining Graham on the panel of judges will be John Harper, an experienced Trinity College examiner who has travelled extensively judging instruments, voices and ensembles) and Kenneth Peers, the manager and chief recording engineer of the New Eden Studio in Dover.

Andrew Kelly, Marketing and PR Manager, DFDS Seaways English Channel, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting this event, and encouraging musicians to get together from the UK and Europe to compete in Dover. We’re hoping some of the bands will give us a preview on the ferry on the way over!”

The Brass Band Contest will be held at Dover Town Hall on 11 February 2012, commencing at 9am. Tickets will be available on the door priced at £5. The evening concert with the Cory Band will be held in Nye Hall at the Duke of York’s Royal Military School in Dover at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £18 and will be available from the Box Office at Forwoods Music (Phone: 01304 872 812) or direct from Graham Harvey (Phone: 07788 723370 or email: graham3968@hotmail.com)
