Brass band contest

DFDS SEAWAYS is also generously sponsoring an exciting new brass band contest at the Dover Town Hall on Saturday 11 February 2012.

The marketing team at DFDS Seaways and local musician Graham Harvey (Contest Director) have collaborated to organise this event – a first of its kind.

This new Open contest, which is hoped will be an annual event, will be available for bands from all sections to enter.

There will be places for fifteen bands in all to compete and DFDS is inviting three bands from Europe to take part, and is hoping from entries from Denmark (as DFDS is a Danish company), Belgium and Poland in particular,

There will be a draw on 1st December 2011 to select the final British 12 competitors.

All bands applying to enter will have the chance to take advantage of a very special recording deal with the New Eden Studio - a two day recording session and 500 CDs for an extremely competitive price of less than £2,000. This offer will be available until 31st December 2012.

The bands competing will be required to perform for a maximum of 20 minutes, playing a hymn tune from the SA hymn book or the Wright & Round’s red book, plus a solo item and one other free choice piece.

Sponsored by DFDS Seaways, the winning band will receive £5,000 and a recording contract, plus 500 CDs with New Eden Studio in Dover – an equivalent value of £3,000. The Best Soloist will receive £500 and a recording contract plus 10 CDs with the New Eden Studio. If the winning band is a Championship section band, then a prize of £1,000 will also be awarded to the highest scoring non-championship band.

There will be three adjudicators; Graham Harvey, John Harper (both experienced Trinity College examiners who have travelled extensively around the world examining all instruments, voices and ensembles), and Kenneth Peers, the manager and chief recording engineer of the New Eden Studio with many years’ experience of recording bands of all types.

The contest will be held at Dover Town Hall, Biggin Street and will commence at 9am and will run until approximately 6pm.

Day tickets will be available on the door priced at £5.
