Panto Day Event

A group of children from the Newcastle area were given an early Christmas gift this week when DFDS Seaways invited them aboard one of its cruise ferries to enjoy a festive pantomime.

Tickets to the production of Dick Whittington were donated to Children North East by DFDS Seaways as part of the cruise ferry operator’s continuing support for the local charity. The children were treated to the live show of the classic tale of Dick Whittington and his cat on board cruise ferry King Seaways while moored at the Port of Tyne in North Shields.

After the show the group were invited to enjoy children’s activities and meet the DFDS Seaways mascot, Jack the Pirate, before being treated to a three course meal in the ship’s restaurant.

The invitation to step on board a ship and watch a pantomime was organised by DFDS Seaways to give local children a truly magical experience that they might not otherwise ever have had.

The cruise ferry operator is also supporting Children North East’s Giving Tree Appeal throughout December, with members of staff donating Christmas gifts for local children.

Children North East, which is DFDS Seaways’ official charity, provides emotional support and practical help to children and young people across the region. The charity, which was founded over 120 years ago, strives to ensure that all children have a safe, fulfilling childhood and have equal access to opportunities and the support they need to reach their potential.

Carol Taylor, Senior Fundraiser for Children North East, said: “There are around 132,000 children in the north east who are officially living in poverty and it is our aim to provide support to these children to ensure they have a better chance in life. Offering this service requires money, time and perseverance, and we can’t thank DFDS Seaways enough for their continued support in raising the much needed funds that allow us to offer our services.”

DFDS Seaways has supported Children North East for the past seven years, generating money for the charity through internal staff fundraising activities and high profile customer promotions. Last month the organisation operated seven charity mini cruises from Newcastle to Amsterdam where passengers were offered heavily discounted bookings with one hundred per cent of the ticket prices being donated directly to Children North East.
