DFDS Seaways Celebrates Eurovision Contest in Denmark with Special Video

To celebrate this year’s Eurovision Song Contest taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark (6-10 May), Danish-owned ferry operator, DFDS Seaways, has recreated one of the UK’s most iconic Eurovision moments. Around 100 crew and shore-based staff from the award-winning ferry company embraced the glitz, glamour and cheesy Europop synonymous with Eurovision to create a lip-sync video of Bucks Fizz’s winning 1981 entry, “Making Your Mind Up”. The video even features a special celebrity appearance from former Bucks Fizz band member and TV presenter, Cheryl Baker!

The video was filmed on two of DFDS Seaways’ cruise ferries: King Seaways, which sails on the Newcastle-Amsterdam route and Sirena Seaways, which sails from Harwich to Esbjerg in Denmark. The film cast comprises members of crew from all areas of the ships, including the bridge, the engine room, entertainment, reception, catering and housekeeping teams, plus check-in staff ashore too. It is clear to see that the crew members who volunteered had lots of fun when shooting the video, which includes some exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of areas normally not open to passengers.

Max Foster, passenger director at DFDS Seaways, comments: “We are proud of our Danish heritage and wanted to celebrate the iconic Eurovision contest taking place in Copenhagen this year. Much like our company, we wanted this video to echo both our Danish roots, as well as our sense of fun. We also wanted to recreate an iconic British Eurovision moment that our UK passengers across all our ferry services would recognise, which is why we decided to pay homage to the famous “Making Your Mind Up” track and dance routines.

“We hope that people will enjoy watching the video as much as we enjoyed making it,” he added. Cheryl Baker was part of the original line up of Bucks Fizz that won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981, she still performs with original band members Mike Nolan and Jay Aston and she is currently starring as Marion Cunningham in the touring musical, Happy Days.
