Get a Sea View at the International Sunderland Airshow with DFDS Seaways
DFDS Seaways is offering people the chance to see this year’s International Sunderland Airshow from a different perspective; from the decks of its two cruise ferries. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the airshow takes place over the weekend of the 27 and 28 July and is set to be an action-packed weekend of high-speed jet engines and intricate, daring routines from aeronautical display teams.
DFDS Seaways will be running two special sail-outs over the weekend, giving passengers the chance to watch the amazing airshow action from the comfort of the ships’ decks, as well as enjoy a delicious three-course buffet meal and live entertainment onboard.
Sunderland International Airshow was established in 1988 and has grown in popularity every year since. A veritable North East institution, the renowned airshow, which is organised by Sunderland Live on behalf of Sunderland City Council, attracts over a million people each year with its energetic and exciting performances from the likes of The Red Arrows, The Royal Navy’s Black Cats and The RAF Falcons.
The DFDS cruise ferry will depart from its Newcastle port at 11am for a leisurely sailing down the river Tyne towards Sunderland. The ship will arrive offshore at Roker and Seaburn at around 12.20pm and from 1pm you can watch spectacular flying displays from the RAF, Royal Navy, Joint Helicopter Command and civilian aircraft too. Highlights include the Red Arrows, who will open the show on Saturday July 27.
The ship will depart and head back to port at 2pm, but the fun doesn’t stop there. Children can head to the Kids’ Club to enjoy fun and games from the children’s entertainer and meet DFDS Seaways mascot, Jack the Pirate. There’ll be live music from the resident band and solo musician and you can also explore the ship.
Max Foster, UK passenger director at DFDS Seaways, said: “The Sunderland International Airshow has been a firm favourite on the summer calendar in the North East for years and it’s great to see so many visitors coming from all over the world to witness this truly spectacular event.
“With our special sail out, families, friends and couples alike can admire the view from the comfort and safety of the ship’s decks, providing an exclusive perspective of the breath-taking high speed jets and display teams as well as the fantastic coastal scenery along the route. It’s sure to be a truly enjoyable day out for everyone.”
The Sunderland Airshow is one of a number of DFDS Seaways day sailings from Newcastle this summer. Tickets for the special Sunderland Airshow day sailing are available on the DFDS Seaways website and are priced at £30 per adult and £15 per child (kids under three go free). The price includes a three-course buffet lunch, as well as free parking at the Port of Tyne.
