Below are just a few ideas where you could visit within easy reach of our port in IJmuiden.
Edam & Volendam||
Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland
Zuid-Kennemerland is a gorgeous national park just 9 miles south of our IJmuiden port and it’s a lovely place to relax or enjoy a walk. Characterised by sand dunes and forests, it is home to some of the most breath-taking scenery in Holland, as well as a large variety of flora and fauna, perfect for wildlife spotters. Near the national park, you’ll find long swathes of sandy beach at Bloemendaal an Zee or Zandvoort, which are 2 of Holland’s most popular beach resorts. Once you’ve finished exploring, why not stop off for a bite to eat in the town of Bloemendaal?
Located just half an hour to the north from our port, pretty Alkmaar is a city with a famous cheese market where you can pick up a wheel of Edam, Leerdammer, Gouda or whatever you like! The market takes place from 10am-12.30pm every Friday from April to September and is announced via the ringing of the town’s church bell. The city also has a museum dedicated to the Beatles, celebrating John Lennon’s first ever guitar being built in Alkmaar. Alkmaar’s town centre is historic and beautiful, with canals running through the streets, which you can cruise along should you wish. Alkmaar is also well-stocked for shops and restaurants, so you’re sure to enjoy yourself spending a day wandering and exploring the city.
One of Holland’s prettiest cities, and favourite shopping destinations, Haarlem is like Amsterdam without the hustle and bustle that comes with the capital. Canal-lined streets with cobbles and cafes open up to classic European town squares, perfect for exploring. Haarlem is also home to the famous Teylers Museum, the oldest museum in Holland, which stocks paintings from the Dutch Masters. The city’s Ten Boom Museum also tells the story of the Ten Boom family, who hid fugitives from the Nazis during the holocaust, a fascinating and emotional tale for history buffs. Volendam & Edam
The town centres of Edam and Volendam lie just 2 miles apart, so it’s easy to visit both in a day if you have your car. Edam is a historic town with a rich heritage and beautiful, authentic 17th century architecture. You can also pick up samples of the eponymous cheese at the market which runs weekly throughout the summer. Volendam is a traditional Dutch town with a strong artistic heritage, having been the home of Renoir and Picasso in the past. The bustling crowds around the harbour are the heartbeat of the city, and from here you can rent boats for tours and see the city in a new way. Alternatively, stay on land and treat yourself to some shopping or a bite to eat.
Our ships are comfortable, modern and well-equipped with a range of activities and facilities to keep you entertained as you sail, so when you’re travelling with us, your break starts as soon as you board. Relax with a drink in one of our onboard bars, with a wide range of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails to choose from. Hit the shops, with high-street-beating prices on fashion, fragrance, confectionery and other top brands. We also have a cinema onboard where you can catch a Hollywood blockbuster. End your night by retiring to your private, en suite cabin. For a more luxurious crossing, you can even book one of our Premium Commodore or Commodore De Luxe cabins, with more space and a free mini bar.
