DFDS & ORCA nominated for National Lottery award. Vote for us!

Hurry! Voting closes on 29 July, so don't miss out.

DFDS and ORCA have enjoyed a strong working relationship since 2007, including winning a Responsible Tourist Award in 2011. We are delighted to announce that, thanks to our continued great work in the community, our Your Seas project has been shortlisted for a National Lottery Award!

We’re really proud to be nominated for this award, and even more proud to be the only charity based in the North East to be shortlisted. We hope that, by winning, we can attain national recognition for ORCA’s vital marine conservation work. However, to win, we need YOUR help, so vote for us here and help a great charity continue its fantastic work.

What is the Your Seas project? What is the Your Seas Project?

Through our relationship with ORCA we are able to provide first class education and wildlife watching activities onboard KING SEAWAYS on our Newcastle-Amsterdam route. In addition to this, we developed a completely new outreach programme within North Tyneside which engages members of the public. We have called this the Your Seas project.

The mission for Your Seas was to get local people interested in protecting their local coastline and the marine wildlife found in the North Sea. In addition to the education programme we have launched our One Small Change campaign where we asked people to pledge to make a very small change in their behaviour which would impact on the health of the marine environment.

We think our project is fantastic, but don’t just take our word for it! Here are some testimonials from people who have experienced it first-hand…

“The Your Seas Project has opened the minds of not only our children but also our parents.” - Paul Rickeard, Head Teacher, St Peter’s Primary School

“Absolutely fantastic day. Very, very well organised. Lots of different activities for the children that were educational and lots of fun. Thank-you very much.” - Stephenson Memorial Primary

“The best thing for me was seeing how the children took a genuine interest in protecting marine mammals and made pledges to do their bit to help.” - Your Seas Volunteer Survey Response

“The best part was being able to share my love of marine life with my ten year old grandson. I feel the education of children in marine wildlife conservation should be encouraged.” - Your Seas Volunteer Survey Response

“This opportunity led me to develop my skills in delivering environmental education in an informal, yet fun way. It allowed me to build and strengthen essential employment skills and was a great way to inspire my local community to develop a sense of ownership over the North East coast.” - Your Seas Volunteer Survey Response

“Although I had knowledge of UK cetaceans by surveying for ORCA on DFDS ferries, I had no idea that they could be spotted so close to land in the North East of England.” - Your Seas Volunteer Survey Response
