Amsterdam hosts a fantastic array of fun and fascinating festivals for all the family during the month of August and DFDS is offering deals to help festival-goers get there.
The festival season runs throughout the height of summer and features events covering the arts, culture, music and comedy. There is a variety of choice on offer for festival-goers, whether travelling as a family, a couple or a group of friends. Top recommendations from DFDS include:
Artis ZOOmeravonden (now until 27 August) – explore the Artis Royal Zoo during Saturday summer evenings until sunset. Get up close and personal with furry and feathered beasts and hear all about them from animal carers and zookeepers during workshops and guided tours. Well-known Dutch musicians and students from Amsterdam’s music academy serenade guests from the bandstand
De Parade Theatre Festival (12–28 August) – Outdoor theatre from artists in full regalia, evening performances and a kids parade with theatre, music and workshops. The festival offers a series of open-air performances and activities in secret locations
Uitmarkt (26-28 August) – This annual festival opens the cultural season and features more than 450 performances from up to 2,000 artists. A range of musical tastes are catered for with classical, hip-hop, dance and jazz. The festival is free and features large outdoor venues and the Manuscripta book market
Grachtenfestival (12-21 August) – Amsterdam’s canals provide the perfect backdrop to relax and unwind to the sounds of classical music as musicians perform from floating pontoons and canal-side stages. The highlight of the ten-day festival is the Prinsengracht concert on the pontoon by the Pulitzer hotel, which is free to attend and is broadcast live on Dutch TV
Vondelpark Open Air Theatre (every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 19–28 August) - Steeped in musical and theatrical history, the Vondelpark has hosted theatre, dance and music since 1974. During the summer its Vondelpark Parties tap into Amsterdam’s reputation as the home of the hottest Dutch nightlife
Jordaan Festival (26-28 August) – The weekend festival in Jordaan celebrates the district’s working-class history and features folk music, flea markets, auctions and sports competitions
Amsterdam Gay Pride (until 7 August) – One of the biggest and most colourful events of its kind around the globe, Amsterdam’s Gay Pride festival attracts more than 350,000 people. It is a lively event that welcomes all visitors in a spirit of celebration to enjoy the carnival atmosphere
Mysteryland (27-28 August) – Mysteryland is a highlight of the dance music festival year and includes performances by some of Europe’s favourite house, techno and electro groups. It also includes the ‘smallest cinema of the world’ and exhibitions, theatre and spoken-word artists
