Tournai is a city with a multi-cultural history which is reflected in its appearance. The architecture is influenced by Romans, Franks, Spanish, French and

Austrian settlers making it a wonderful, eclectic mix of gothic and baroque styles.

Located in Wallonia, in Belgium’s southern region, Tournai is a world apart from Flanders despite being less than an hour away from Bruges and Brussels.

What to see

What to see in Tournai

Tournai’s architecture is one of its most striking and interesting features, and the Notre Dame Cathedral is one of its gems. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000, the impressive size and 5 huge towers dominate the skyline of the city. The Belfry is another large and imposing structure which you can see from most areas of the city. Climb the 257 steps and enjoy the stunning panoramic view.

Wander through the historic centre of Tournai and you won’t be surprised to discover that this is Belgium’s oldest city. You can even take a tour through the city from the tourism office, including a multimedia film about the history of the city.

The Museum of Fine Arts contains pieces from art nouveau to modernism inspired by Art Deco. The exhibitions rooms are topped by glass cupolas, allowing plenty of natural light to enter the building too. It is also home to one of two Manet pieces in Belgium.

One of the most prestigious vestiges of medieval military architecture in Belgium, Pont des Trous was part of the surrounding city walls built in the 13th century. To this day it remains a spectacular sight and a major attraction for visitors to the city.
