Elmer's Great North Parade | Beyond the Sea

DFDS are proud to be part of the Elmer's Great North Parade public art trail, taking place across Tyne and Wear to support St Oswald's Hospice.

From 21 August to 1 November, streets, parks and open spaces across the North East will become home to 50 giant sculptures of the much-loved children's book character Elmer the Patchwork Elephant.

We have sponsored one of the Elmer sculptures and have named him Beyond the Sea.

He now sits proudly on the North Shields Fish Quay, so he can say hello and goodbye to King and Princess Seaways as they sail past every day.

Why not come along to visit Beyond the Sea and unlock an extra special treat from DFDS on the Elmer's Great North Parade app?

Beyond the Sea was designed and painted by Dutch artist Zeloot Illustrations. We asked our illustrator to give our Elmer a seafaring theme with aspects of the two cities we bring together and we are delighted with the result. Inspiration for Beyond the Sea came from the colourful cultures, architecture and traditions of Newcastle and Amsterdam as well as the daily seafaring journeys we take onboard our ferries. Both city's skylines can be seen on our elephant and we hope people stop to try to spot places they've visited on holiday or places that are part of their everyday life.

It's not just colourful elephants who are allowed on our ferries, dogs, cats and other animals are too. We know your pets are part of the family, so why wouldn't you want to bring your furry friends with you on holiday? Well now you can, thanks to our pet travel scheme.
