Checking-in & Boarding information: Newcastle-Amsterdam

Before you set off on your trip across the North Sea, you’ll need to check-in and board the ship at our port in North Shields near Newcastle. This is a simple and straightforward experience, and this page will give you all of the information you need to know before you board.

On arrival

When you arrive, foot passengers should proceed straight to the ferry terminal and check-in. If you’re travelling with a vehicle (including bicycles), you will need to go to the vehicle check-in booths. Please have your booking confirmation and passports ready and remove passports from covers.

Pet travel

Travelling with pets

If you are travelling with pets please make sure they comply with the conditions of our pet travel scheme. You can find out more information here​.

If you are travelling with a vehicle you will need to check-in at the vehicle booths and present your pet’s documentation. You will be given a Pet Travel Information leaflet along with a pet hanger to display in your car window.

If you are a foot passenger with a dog please check-in at the main terminal. Please be aware you may be one of last passengers to board with your dog. Once checked in, you will be shown to the Pet Hotel by a member of the ship’s crew.

Please note when checking-in with pets in IJmuiden, all pets must first be taken to the main passenger terminal, along with all relevant documentation. This applies both to pets travelling with a vehicle or foot passengers travelling with a dog.

Onboard meals

Onboard meal bookings

If you have pre-booked onboard meals, the value of your meals will be added to your boarding cards. 

You will need to take these cards to the restaurant when you dine and present to your waiter.

You will also be issued with a table reservation card if you have made a table reservation.

If you have not already pre-booked your evening meals and breakfast, we can do this for you at check-in allowing you to take advantage of the pre-purchase discounts we can offer compared to onboard prices.

Cars, caravans and motorhomes

If you’re travelling in a car, caravan or motorhome on arrival at port follow the signs for the vehicle check-in. Please make sure you arrive no later than 45 minutes before departure.

You do not have to leave your vehicle, simply drive up to the vehicle check-in booths and show your passports and booking confirmation. 

You can also add onboard meals, drinks tastings and upgrade your cabin at check-in, subject to availability.

During check-in we’ll give you your boarding cards, which are also your cabin keys. You will receive a separate boarding card for your vehicle.

Once checked-in staff will direct you to a vehicle lane and when boarding commences you will proceed to the vehicle scanning hall for security checks. 

Please have all your boarding cards, vehicle card and passports ready for final inspection. Security personnel may need to inspect inside your vehicle.

You will then be directed to a vehicle lane to await embarkation. DFDS crew will guide you onboard the ship to your parking position. 

Now turn off the engine, select the first gear, engage the hand brake and turn off the alarm. Please ensure your vehicle boarding card is visible on your dashboard.

Please make note of which deck you are on (each deck is numbered), so you can easily find your vehicle when you disembark.

Please listen carefully for announcements that will be made onboard as to when to proceed to your vehicle ready for disembarkation

​​Motorbikes

If you’re travelling with a motorbike please follow the signs for check-in and be sure to arrive no later than 45 minutes before departure. Simply drive up to the vehicle check-in booths and show your passports and booking confirmation. You can also add onboard meals, drinks tastings and upgrade your cabin at check-in, subject to availability.

During check-in we’ll give you your boarding cards, which are also your cabin keys. You will receive a separate boarding card for your motorbike.

Once checked-in staff will direct you to a vehicle lane and when boarding commences you will proceed to the vehicle scanning hall for security checks. Please have all your boarding cards, motorbike card and passports ready for final inspection. Security personnel may need to inspect your motorbike.

You will be directed to a vehicle lane to await embarkation. DFDS crew will guide you onboard the ship to your parking position.

Watch out for slippery surfaces when you are ascending the ramp to the ferry and keep to the grip surface, which is marked with a yellow line. Set your motorbike onto its stand, engage first gear, fix your helmet to the motorbike and switch off the alarm. Ensure you fix the motorbike to the floor with a lashing across the front and/or rear wheel, and one lashing across the seat, hooked to the floor.

Please make note of which deck you are on (each deck is numbered), so you can easily find your motorbike when you disembark. Please listen carefully for announcements that will be made onboard as to when to proceed to your motorbike ready for disembarkation. Motorbikes may be been loaded and disembarked together.

Foot passengers

Foot passengers

If you’re travelling as a foot passenger please check in at our passenger terminal. Check-in opens 150 minutes prior to departure and closes 45 minutes before departure.

Please show your passports and booking confirmation, removing passports from any covers.

During check-in we’ll give you your boarding cards, which are also your cabin keys. You can also add onboard meals, drinks tastings and upgrade your cabin at check-in, subject to availability.

Once you have checked-in, you will wait in the terminal until boarding commences. At the boarding gate you will need to present all passports and boarding cards to ship personnel with your passport open at the photograph page.

Security checks will be carried once you pass through the boarding gate. You may be asked to open your luggage for inspection. You will then walk along the air bridge to board the ship.

Upon arrival in IJmuiden you will disembark the ship via the air bridge. Please remember to take your passport and boarding cards with you.

In the main terminal you will need to present your passport to Dutch Passport Control. Once you have cleared Passport Control, coaches will be available to transport customers who have booked transfers to Amsterdam city centre. Please note transfers are included for mini cruise, cruise & stay break and hotel break passengers. Transfers will take approximately 45 minutes.

When you arrive at IJmuiden port for your return crossing, mini cruise passengers do not need to check-in. You can proceed to the boarding gate when it opens. All other passengers will need to check-in to receive their boarding card.

Bicycles

Bicycles

Bicycles board in the same way as any other vehicle, but for your safety and convenience there are a few things you should know.

When you arrive at port, check-in at the vehicle booths. You will be given your boarding card which is also your cabin key and a boarding card for you bicycle. 

You will also be issued with a table reservation card if you have pre-booked meals onboard and made a table reservation in advance.

Cyclists are often loaded together in one large group, or you may be asked to board amongst the cars. In poor weather conditions we will always try to ensure you are boarded first.

On the car deck crew will provide you with lashings so that you can secure your bicycle to the floor or attach it to a wall or railing.

When the ship docks in IJmuiden, crew will instruct you when it is safe to disembark. When doing this, you should dismount and walk for safety reasons.
