There is also the Festival of Light, which bathes the city and its waterways in a sea of technicolour from November to January. Enjoy all of this as you pick up gifts for friends and family in some of Amsterdam's excellent shops, department stores and boutiques.
If you're looking for a Christmas Market with that little something extra, then look no further than Valkenburg, just a few hours' drive from Amsterdam, where a local cave is transformed into Santa's Grotto. Entry is €5, but that's a bargain when you see the wonderful decoration inside the cave and the range of stalls on offer. Spend an evening wandering around the most impressive-looking market you could hope to see, and pick up something for your friends and family.
