Create your own festive break to Holland 2016
There are a number of well-known Christmas Markets in Holland including those in Valkenburg, Dordrecht, Deventer, Maastricht and Nijmegen, the oldest city in Holland. Visitors to Dutch Christmas Markets can secure all sorts of Christmas specialities and relish the atmosphere of a Dutch Advent.
With DFDS, if you choose to, you can take your car to Holland on one of our ferries, making transport simple. Cross from Newcastle to our port in IJmuiden, and you’ll be just 17 miles away from Amsterdam. Alternatively, you can access Holland from either of our routes from Dover to France in just a few hours!
Amsterdam is a fascinating city with plenty to do for all visitors, but at Christmas time the Dutch capital is covered in festive lights and decorations, transforming its canal-lined streets into a winter wonderland. There is also the Festival of Light on the canals, which bathes the city in a sea of technicolour from November to January. Enjoy all of this as you pick up gifts for friends and family in some of Amsterdam’s excellent shops, department stores and boutiques.
If you’re looking for a Christmas Market with that little something extra, then look no further than Valkenburg, just a few hours’ drive from Amsterdam, where a local cave is transformed into Santa’s Grotto. Entry is €5, but that’s a bargain when you see the wonderful decoration inside the cave and the range of stalls on offer. Spend an evening wandering around the most impressive-looking market you could hope to see, and pick up something for your friends and family.
Nijmegen is one of Holland’s ancient cities, and has a traditional Christmas market to compliment this. Known as the Mariken Winter Festival, the Christmas market takes place in December and is part of a city-wide festive celebration. As well as the Christmas market, there are also festive illuminations in Valkhofpark and a traditional crib in Koningsplein.
Alternatively, the cosy Magical Maastricht market will give visitors an enjoyable Christmas market experience, on a smaller scale than many others. The Vrijthof Square is the centre of the event, with plenty of stalls to see and an ice rink if you’re feeling brave!
