getting there

Our Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry crossing is ideal for this driving tour, as the tour starts in Holland, and Maastricht is only 2½ hours from our Dutch port. You could also hop on a ferry crossing from Dover to Dunkirk or Calais. From the former you are just 3 hours’ drive from Maastricht, and from the latter you are only 3¼ hours from Maastricht.

Day 1 – Maastricht

This quaint town in southern Holland, with its Medieval architecture, provides the perfect backdrop for a charming festive market. Aptly named ‘Magical Maastricht’ during the festive season, the city is covered in illuminations, including the animation of 200 mistletoes on the trees in Onze Lieve Vrouweplein square. Vrijthof square is where you’ll find the charming market, as well as an ice rink and ferris wheel.

Day 2 – Aachen

Take the 35-minute drive across the border into Germany to Aachen, a picturesque ancient town. Christmas sees the cathedral and surrounding streets become something out of a fairytale. Wooden lodges serving up fresh mulled wine, adorned with garlands that twinkle with fairy lights, it’s no wonder this ambient market is frequently counted amongst Europe’s top five festive markets.

Day 3 – Liège

Crossing your second border in 2 days, drive west from Germany to Liège in Belgium. This culture hub in the region of Wallonia hosts a spectacular yuletide village. It’s the oldest and biggest Christmas market in Belgium. Wander around the 200 chalets, all filled with seasonal treats and partake in any of the festive activities, including ice rinks and sledge runs.

Day 4 – Trier

Head south and back into Germany for your final stop at Trier. Trier’s Christmas market is aptly set in the medieval Main Market, beneath the striking cathedral. Warm up with a mug of authentic, Moselle glühwein while taking in the seasonal music, or indulge in a local treat from the Christmas bakery.
