Skipper The Great North Snowdog
DFDS are proud to be part of the Great North Snowdogs public art trail, taking across Tyne and Wear to support St Oswald’s Children’s Hospice.
We have sponsored one of the 60 large Snowdog sculptures, based on the popular character from The Snowman™ and The Snowdog, and our Snowdog has been beautifully designed and painted by artist Joanne Wishart, with a colourful maritime theme. We’ve named our Snowdog Skipper and many of our customers have enjoyed a sneak preview of Skipper onboard Princess Seaways throughout August.
You can visit Skipper and the other 59 uniquely decorated sculptures on the public art trail which runs until 29 November.
SKIPPER JOINS THE TRAIL
Skipper was unveiled to the public on 5 August and he enjoyed a relaxing cruise along the Tyne onboard Port of Tyne workboat, the Sir Bobby Robson. He was then lifted onboard Princess Seaways and taken up to the Sky Bar where he stayed for the rest of the month for customers to enjoy.
Now Skipper’s adventures at sea have come to an end and he has moved to new location on the Great North Snowdogs trail. We don’t think he’ll miss the ships that much, as he’s located on the North Shields Fish Quay, so he can say hello and goodbye to King and Princess Seaways as they sail past every day.

Skipper was designed and painted by Newcastle-based artist Joanne Wishart. We asked Joanne to give a maritime feel to our Snowdog and we are delighted with the result. Joanne takes inspiration for her work from the north east coastline and maritime scenes, and our Snowdog depicts scenes from the river Tyne, including our ferries!
