Camping in France
Camping is a popular French national pastime, as well as being something which attracts hosts of tourists each year due to the high standards of the facilities all around the country. With wonderful countryside and beautiful coastlines all within reach of fantastic campsites, many of which include restaurants, sports courts, outdoor activities and more, you’re sure to enjoy a short break camping out under the stars in France.
With so many places to stay, we thought we’d ask our friends at the Caravan Club for their favourite campsites within easy reach of our French ports in Dieppe, Dunkirk and Calais, or even our port in IJmuiden, near Amsterdam.

Château du Gandspette
Address - 62910 Éperlecques, Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Located just 35 minutes from Calais and set in wooded parkland, Château du Gandspette is perfectly situated to explore the Pas-de-Calais region of France. On-site facilities include 2 swimming pools, tennis court, multi-sports area, bar, restaurant, takeaway and fitness room. Central to the site is the beautiful 19th century château.
A visit to the ancient market town of St Omer with its cathedral, museum and gardens is a must. Nearby you will find hiking, theme parks, tree-top walks, canoeing, horse riding and guided nature walks, so there’s plenty to keep the whole family happy. Belgium is within easy reach, and worth the journey to try the waffles and ice-cream!

Caravanning des 4 vents
Address - 77610 Crèvecouer-en-Brie, Île-de-France.

Ideally situated just 40 minutes from Paris and 15 minutes from Disneyland® Paris, this spacious site is set in a former orchard close to the small village of Crèvecouer-en-Brie. Facilities on site include a swimming pool, snack bar, takeaway and children’s play area.
Just 10 minutes’ drive from the site is Parc Felines which has over 140 species of cats from all over the world. Parc Astérix, theme park of the famous comic book, is within an hour’s drive. For those interested in history and architecture the Castle of Blandy-les-Tours, Castle of vaux le Vicomte and the city of Fontainebleu are all nearby.
The large grass pitches include 6 amp electricity and shared water. Wi-Fi is available in the reception and is free of charge.

Camping Port’land is the ideal base to visit the Normandy beaches; Utah, Omaha, Juno and Sword are all close by, as is the D-day museum at Arromanches; making this site ideal for history buffs.
The historic town of Bayeux is just a short drive away; here you can see the famous tapestry, wonderful cathedral and enjoy the medieval architecture.
Just 600 metres from the site is the charming village of Port-en-Bessin which has everything you need and some great restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood.
The campsite has an indoor and outdoor pool, bar, restaurant, takeaway, shop, and a play area with inflatables. There is a choice of four fishing ponds where you can try your luck at catching carp, or find a sunny spot to relax and watch the ducks.
The grass pitches are an excellent size and all have 16 amp electricity, water and drainage. Wi-Fi is available free of charge in the main building.

Château de Lez-Eaux

Set around and 18th century château, on-site facilities include an indoor pool with slides, heated outside pool, restaurant, take-away, bar, shop, tennis, bike hire and fishing. During high season there is a children’s club with a variety of activities to keep young family members entertained and for the adults there is the option of massage or beauty treatments.
This area of Normandy has plenty to offer including adventure trails, paint ball, bungee jumping, hiking, horse riding, aquarium and mini-golf. There is also a great choice of museums including: Christian Dior, Villedieu copper, Avranches war and Cité de la mer. A 10 minute car journey will take you to the beautiful sandy beaches of Jullouville where you will find a great range of restaurants and local markets.

Le Château de Chanteloup

Surrounded by 20 hectares of meadows, woods and countryside, Chanteloup is a great choice for nature lovers who enjoy walking and the great outdoors, with over 39 species of birds in the local area you can have a great time getting the binoculars out and trying to spot as many as possible. The onsite facilities include a pool, shop, bar, restaurant, children’s play area, a small fishing lake which can also be used for canoeing, an 18th century château and 19th century orangery.
Le Mans is only half an hour away, and although it is famous for the 24 hour racing it also has one of the most beautiful Gallo-Roman enclosures in France. Not to be missed is “La Nuit des Chiméres” a spectacular light show which projects images onto the historic buildings and monuments around Le Mans, regular evening shows take place during July and August.

Indigo Les Moliéres
Address - 72140 Sille Le Guillaume, Pays de la Loire.

Indigo Les Moliéres is a natural campsite situated in the Sillé national forest. Surrounded by trees and close to a lake, it is the perfect place to get back to nature among 3500 hectares of space. On-site activities include pony trekking, sports tournaments, archery and a small weekly market specialising in local and organic products. On-site facilities include a small shop, bike hire, games area, pool and a snack wagon in July and August.
Sillé Le Guillaume is a pretty village just 2 miles from the campsite. The parish church and the Château of Sillé are both classified as historical monuments. A visit to the Alpes Mancelles and the Regional Wildlife Park is a must. If you are feeling active this is the perfect location to try mountain biking, hiking and water sports.
The site offers grassy pitches with 10 amp electricity. There is free Wi-Fi at the reception and lounge area.

Les Ormes Domaine & Resort

In the heart of a 200 hectare country estate, Les Ormes is more like a small village than a campsite! Facilities include an 18 hole golf course, a horse riding school, 6 swimming pools, zip wire, tree top adventure, climbing wall, archery, crazy golf, fishing, games room, children’s club and evening shows/entertainment. There is a choice of restaurants and a terrace bar overlooking the water park.
There is also plenty to do and see in the local area, including Mont St Michel with its Benedictine abbey, the walled town of St Malo, and the historic towns of Dinard, Dinan and Dol-de-Bretagne. There is also the opportunity to take a day trip to Guernsey and Jersey from St Malo port.
A choice of pitches ranging in size is available with a choice of 6 or 10 amp electricity, some have water and drainage too. Wi-Fi is free at the reception and bar, or you can pay for a connection on your pitch.

Château Camping Le Colombier

Camping Le Colombier is surrounded by woods, meadows and parkland, in the heart of Pays d’Auge, making it a perfect choice for walking and cycling enthusiasts. Famous for its production of cheese and cider there is plenty of opportunity to visit local producers and taste before you buy. Nearby attractions include the Cerza zoo, Naturospace Butterfly Park, golf, sailing, horse racing and traditional weekly markets.
On-site facilities include a bar, restaurant, takeaway, children’s play area, tennis, bike hire, fishing, heated swimming pool and mini golf. During the summer season classical outdoor concerts are organised in front of the château, and if you’re feeling energetic you can always join a game of football or volley ball.
This site offers large, open pitches with 12 amp electricity. Wi-Fi is available free of charge throughout the site.

Where to camp in France
The Loire Valley
Sitting on the banks of the River Loire, the Loire Valley is one of the country's most idyllic and scenic regions, perfect for a family camping trip or a caravan holiday in France. Head to Les Portes de Sancerres, a tranquil location below the slopes of the Sancerre wine region so you'll have plenty of opportunities to sample the local produce. Alternatively, if you're keen to camp in the wild there are lots of secret paths that lead off quiet roads to discover secluded picnic areas and disused farm tracks.
The Cote d’Opale
On France’s northern coastline, the Cote d’Opale is a region of stunning beauty and fantastic scenery with some of the very best campsites in France. Camping Blanc Nez on the Cote d’Opale is located in the wildest part of the region, with space for caravans and motorhomes as well as tents. Alternatively, you can stay in specialist lodges in Le Clos du Pays Sauvage, perfect if you fancy a more comfortable camping getaway.
