Golfing in Europe
If the idea of a game of golf in a gorgeous European destination appeals to you then you’re not alone. There are over 4 million golfers in the UK (of wildly varying ability!) and lots of them travel to play abroad. It’s no surprise really, given the wonderful European scenery, not to mention the better weather and the opportunity to enjoy new courses to test their skills. Plus, we’re sure anyone who’s played golf will agree that sometimes after a particularly tense game you’ll feel like you need a break!
The beauty of travelling by ferry is you can take your own car and pack your clubs, and everything else you need in your boot. We have compiled a list of excellent golf courses within easy reach of our ports in Calais, Dunkirk and Dieppe. What’s more you don’t need to be a member to play – take a look at the list on the right.
Just a short ferry ride with a car across the Channel, it’s no surprise that France is one of the most popular destinations for golfers from the UK. It is also home to some of the most beautiful and famous courses in the world, as well as some hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. The north of France in particular is a popular and famous golfing destination for British tourists.
Despite its small size, there are 89 affiliated golf clubs in Belgium, with over 56,000 members! Belgium is home to some of the oldest golf courses in continental Europe, and they automatically adopt the name “Royal” when they reach 50 years old, so if you’re looking for a guarantee of heritage and quality, choose a course with Royal in its name.
Germany is home to one of the finest European golfers ever, in Bernhard Langer, as well as over 700 golf courses. Most of the best courses are found in the north of the country, due to the light, free-draining soil. Given Germany’s naturally spectacular scenery, it’s no surprise that there are many beautiful areas to golf in the country.
Despite there only being 180 golf courses in Holland, there are more than 350,000 members, so golf is certainly big business in the country. In fact, many of those in the know will tell you that the courses around Holland’s North Sea coast can rival the links courses in the UK and Ireland. The undulating land gives the feeling of space and room to breathe in the courses, which can make any game feel wide open and relaxing.
